The plot is set in an alternative recreation of the ancient Old World, with some regions and nations from that period having some parallels with real-life counterparts. In this universe, all living beings possess an essence known as Rukh (Rufu) and when they die, this essence returns to Rukh 's immense flow (also known as "guidance"), which gives life to all subsequent beings in an eternal resurrection period called "Fate". When a person is overwhelmed with sorrow, rage and hopelessness, their Rukh becomes corrupted, unstable and dark, and in a phase known as "Fall into Depravity" (alias, data) deviates from the main guidance.Also, there are several magic castles full of secrets and traps known as "Dungeons" and each one is the lair of a strong magic being, a Djinn (along with Jin). Individuals who manage to conquer a Dungeon's trials and win the loyalty of their Djinn are known as Dungeon Capturers (Danjon KÅryakusha), who acquire the ability to use their power infused with a personal item of theirs known as a "Metal Vessel" and also build less powerful "Household Vessels" for their companions.
